This month 100 years ago, the Kingdom of Tonga was in a state of distress and alarm after a deadly influenza virus reached its shores, infecting most of the population and killing between 1,000 to 2,000 people (an estimated 4 – 8% of the population at the time) between November 1918 and January 1919. Obituary. Elizabeth Bott Spillius, a distinguished psychoanalyst and anthropologist who, through a chance friendship with Queen Sālote, made a valuable contribution to studies of Tongan society, has died in London on July 4 at the age of 92 years, after an illness.

Two ancient turtles thought to be 150-170 years old were rescued from a certain slow death on the Nuku'alofa waterfront yesterday morning by local conservationists who saw their plight and rallied local businesses for support to save them.
