The Tonga Government has today handed back bookings to airlines and travel agents "Starting tomorrow, services will be provided commercially by airlines and travel agents," said MEIDECC CEO, Paula Ma’u. Tonga is moving toward an incremental border re-opening, with zero MIQ for incoming passengers starting in August.

Tonga is lifting a restriction in order to allow repatriation of over 300 passengers from New Zealand and Vanuatu next week. Changes to repatriation protocols were outlined by the new Minister for Health, Hon Dr Saia Piukala this morning, 14 January, and include repatriating from countries with COVID-19 in the community.

Four members of Tonga's Olympic team arrived safely in Christchurch yesterday, on their way home to Tonga, ‘Amanaki Fakakovikaetau, the Chef de Mission of Team Tonga, told Matangi Tonga tonight. They will spend a total of five weeks in quarantine in New Zealand and Tonga.

A patient at Lautoka Hospital who tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday afternoon, died a few hours later at 6:35pm, confirmed Fiji’s Permanent Secretary of Health, Dr James Fong today. Lautoka Hospital is now in lockdown as part of efforts to prevent a wider outbreak. “Fiji, I do not use the word “war” lightly. But, right now, we are in a war with this virus,” he said.

COVID-19 cases in Fiji continue to increase with six new cases confirmed yesterday, 27 April, bringing the total to 42 active cases, according to health officials. Recent cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed to be the B1617 variant that was first detected in India. Dr James Fong has warned Fijians to stay at home because “any person-to-person contact outside your home could get you infected.”
