A large haul of illicit drugs seized in Vava’u from a yacht called 'JeReVe' in 2012 was destroyed by authorities in Australia, Tonga's Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell confirmed today in response to allegations raised in Parliament by Lord Tu'ilakepa. He said the comments by MPs were unfounded and attacked the reputation of the police.

The 330 arrests mainly for drunk and disorderly conduct in central Nuku’alofa over the last three weeks is a community problem, which “should concern all of you,” says Tonga’s Commissioner of Police. He stated today that 50 people were arrested over the weekend and warned that the Police would continue to take a tough enforcement stance on drunkenness, criminal behaviour and drinking and driving.

"Sālote treated everyone from all walks of life with respect," said Commissioner Stephen Caldwell.

Tonga Police have released the names of three people who died after a fatal crash on Hihifo Road at 'Ahau early Saturday morning 2 July. They are Kalolaine Quick of the Heilala Holiday Lodge at Kanokupolu, Lower Leaving Ma'u from Haveluloto and an off duty policeman Scott 'Ungo'unga. His wife Vai 'Ungo'unga remains in a critical condition in Vaiola Hospital.

Since a Tonga Police Task Force investigation began in August last year, 11 people have been charged in relation to alleged fraudulent activities over the issuing of Tongan passports. While the investigation continues in Nuku'alofa, the Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell said today that public speculation was "unhelpful" and he called for restraint in public commentary through the media in order to allow a fair trial of the accused.
