    : Corruption is rife in the Asia Pacific region says Transparency International in a recent report revealing just over one in four people living in 16 countries surveyed in the area are estimated to have paid a bribe to access public services. The report did not include Tonga or any other Pacific Island nation, but focused on larger economies in Asia with Australia the only nation in the Pacific region included.

    : A Nauran national in Fiji, Julien Henrich (22), has been sentenced to three years in jail by a Fijian court for the death of a Tongan USP student, Sione Tufui (22), who was tragically killed after being attacked by a group of boys outside a nightclub in Suva in 2014. The decision was made today by Justice Salesi Temo of the Fijian High Court

    : Papua New Guineans are mourning the passing of popular radio presenter and media personality, Roger Hau'ofa. The 73-year-old, originally from Tonga, passed away over the weekend due to kidney failure. Roger is the brother of a Tongan writer, the late 'Epeli Hau'ofa.

    : A 39-year-old woman in the US, Zoranna Mapapalangi (reportedly of Tongan ethnicity), has been sentenced to 6 years imprisonment by a Californian court for the robbery and elder abuse of a 75-year-old woman. Zoranna was sentenced last Tuesday, March 28.

    Antarctic Peninsula
    : A huge crack on the Antarctic Peninsula, across the Larsen C ice shelf, set to break free an enormous iceberg six times larger than Tonga’s combined landmass, is being monitored by scientists at Project MIDAS, an Antarctic research group. The crack is more than 100 miles in length and 1,500 feet across and the ice mass could break free within the next few months. The loss of the ice shelf, which acts as a barrier to the flow of land ice, can cause ice to move faster into the ocean contributing to a faster rise of global sea levels.
