Tongan rugby union player, Hosea Saumaki, and Leicester Tigers supporters in England, have sponsored much needed relief supplies to help many families affected by the tsunamis in Tonga.

Around small 200 boats were damaged by the tsunamis generated by the volcanic eruption on January 15, the Prime Minister Hon Siaosi Sovaleni said on Friday, Feb. 17. The loss is significant since boats are essential for fishing to feed families, especially on remote islands, and for transporting villagers. The government is trying to get one or two boats replaced for each community.

Two Chinese navy ships, the Wuzhishan and the Chaganhu, arrived in Nuku'alofa today with over 1300 tons of restoration and relief items for Tonga, including 500 prefabricated houses. By Eleanor Gee.

Additional relief supplies from Japan arrived in Nuku'alofa on the OHSUMI defence ship yesterday, Feb. 9, to assist those affected by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption and tsunamis. Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Munenaga said this was the first visit by a Japan Maritime Self-Defence ship to Tonga in our history.

A total of $300,000 pa’anga has been allocated to provide psycho-social support to those dealing with stress after losing homes during severe Tropical Cyclone Gita in February this year.

Vanilla-growing communities in ‘Eua affected by Tropical Cyclone Gita in February, have received supplies donated by a group of New Zealand businesses, donors, and individuals. The vanilla harvest this year was destroyed by the cyclone.

More than 200,000 tomato and capsicum seeds are available to help Tongan farmers rehabilitate their crops after Cyclone Gita caused widespread damage last month. The seeds were handed over to The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAFF), last week at a ceremony in ‘Eua.

Tonga’s cabinet has approved $21.45million from the TC Gita Relief Account and $2million from the Emergency Fund to be allocated towards clusters managing emergency services for cyclone recovery after Tropical Cyclone Gita struck Tonga a month ago.
