Around small 200 boats were damaged by the tsunamis generated by the volcanic eruption on January 15, the Prime Minister Hon Siaosi Sovaleni said on Friday, Feb. 17. The loss is significant since boats are essential for fishing to feed families, especially on remote islands, and for transporting villagers. The government is trying to get one or two boats replaced for each community.

Additional relief supplies from Japan arrived in Nuku'alofa on the OHSUMI defence ship yesterday, Feb. 9, to assist those affected by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption and tsunamis. An additional US$10 million has been approved by the World Bank to help Tonga continue recovering from Tropical Cyclone Gita that struck Tongatapu and ‘Eua causing widespread damage in February. TC Gita, a category 4 storm, is the strongest cyclone to severely impact Tonga since 1982.

More aid is being distributed to those affected by Tropical Cyclone Gita, not only by the major aid agencies, but other businesses, such as the South Pacific Business Development SPBD Microfinance Tonga, are joining in the relief effort. Over 750 relief kits have been handed out with more given out this week.
