I believe that most people are making a very critical mistake of thinking of democracy as a destination and not viewing it as a process. Democracy is not a certain model or a specific type of people's representation, and this point can be proven by the fact that no two democracies in the world are the same. At the heart of democracy are principles that increase transparency and accountability, but at the same time the success of accomplishing these ideals requires an informed and participating public.

We are all in agreement that a more representative government is the democratic direction we want. But Mr. Fale confused readers by opposing a "cabinet picked from within the legislative assembly" because it "concentrates tremendous power in the hands of a few . . . " - Sione A. Mokofisi

I suggest that the ERC does little for Tonga's guest for good governance, accountability and transparency. Cutting edge research on governance suggests that nominating committees, remuneration committees, audit committees and other sub-committees for that matter do not necessarily provide for better governance, accountability and transparency. Suggested instead from governance literature is that these committees serve a "window dressing" purpose. Further, the same literature does not attribute improved performance to good governance. With that theoretical background I am confident ke fokotu'u atu 'oku 'ikai ke 'iai ha kakunga'a e ERC ki hono improving governance, accountability and transparency in the public sector. - A Funaki

I strongly believe that the current system of government is the best for Tonga. All Tonga has to do is improving minor things here and there. Major changes to the current structure of government would bring disastrous consequences that the people of Tonga would regret and hope that they were not born to this earth. A new system would be disastrous to the nature of our religion and culture which are the corner-stone of peace and harmony in Tonga. - Siosaia Fatani
