Thursday, April 14, 2005 - 11:26 Turtle meat as a delicacy is becoming very popular again, not only on the outer islands of Tonga but also on the main island of Tongatapu. These turtles were pictured at Ha'afeva, Ha'apai, last week as they were being loaded onto the MV Pulupaki for shipment to consumers in Ma'ufanga and Puke on Tongatapu.

As the latest Tongan Government political reform initiative begins to unfold, following the appointment of Cabinet ministers from elected members of Parliament on March 21, we are witnessing a number of interesting political happenings. At the same the Temo's position as an opposition to government has been weakened - they have lost their fighting edge with their acceptance of the government proposal for a piece-meal political reform program. The Consumption Tax that government will introduce on April 1, is intended to distract the public attention from the corruption that is going on at the wharf, said Dr Feleti Sevele, the incumbent Tongatapu No. 2 People's Representative to the Tongan parliament and a candidate for Thursday's General Election.

The E. M. Jones group of companies, one of Tonga's oldest trading companies is selling out. Keith Harris of Guardian Trust, New Zealand, the legal owner of E. M. Jones Group of companies since 1981 said that they had no other option but to sell E. M. Jones Ltd.

The AUD$5 million Tonga Tourism Development Project ended in November after six and a half years of Australian funding. The project, which started in 1997, was administered in Tonga by Geoff Mort and Jennuy Calkin of the Calkin and Simpson Tourism Group.

I had recently planned a trip to Niuatoputapu, but had to cancel when Tongan Airlines went bankrupt. Since that time there has been totally confusion and lack of transportation to the Niuas. Now they say the DC3's cannot use the runways. - Dick Watt
