Tonga has reduced its Managed Isolation Quarantine (MIQ) requirement for international arrivals from 21 to 15 days, for the 180 repatriates who arrived at Fua'amotu International Airport yesterday, on three flights coming from New Zealand, Fiji, and Australia.

Around 57% of Tonga’s eligible population is now fully vaccinated for COVID-19, while nearly 94% of those eligible have received their first dose, the Ministry of Health reported today. Among the 12-17 years age group there has been a high uptake of vaccinations, with 92 percent receiving their first dose.

Tonga's King Tupou VI assented the Vaccination (Amendment) Act 2021 and the Public Health (Amendment) Act 2021, giving government the power to declare that vaccination is compulsory. The Acts (16 & 17 0f 2021) were among 13 pieces of legislation Gazetted by the Tonga Government on 5 November. However, Health officials have said that vaccination will not be forced, while the focus now is for Tonga to attain a voluntary 70% vaccination of its 103,000 population by the end of 2021.

With only 5,000 to 6,000 of the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine remaining, people aged 30 years and over are now eligible to be vaccinated, health officials announced this morning. ‘Eua is receiving 2,000 of those doses and the rest will be available in Tongatapu for first come, first served. No date has been confirmed for inoculating the remainder of the population, due to a limited supply of vaccines worldwide.

Tonga will receive USD$5.5 million to help roll out its vaccination program, after the Asian Development Bank today, approved USD$18.9 million in grants to help four developing member countries in the Pacific roll out safe and effective vaccines against the coronavirus disease COVID-19.

The Tongan government is chartering a Fiji Airways ATR72 aircraft to repatriate 58 Tongans who have been stranded in Fiji since Tonga locked down its border on 23 March 2020. They aim to bring them home on Thursday July 9.
