Seasonal workers from Tonga, Samoa, and Vanuatu will be able to travel to New Zealand quarantine-free starting in October, announced New Zealand’s COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins and Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor yesterday, September 14. The arrangement will help New Zealand’s horticulture industry for the upcoming picking season.

Tonga is one of four Pacific Island countries that is supporting a proposal for the establishment of a Regional Secretariat for labour mobility initiatives and a PACER Plus Implementation Unit. The Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu also offered to host the Labour Mobility Initiatives and the PACER Plus Implementation Unit in their own country, when the proposal was raised at the 2018 Pacific Labour Mobility Annual Meeting, held in Honiara, Solomon Islands on 10 October 2018.
