Tongans in Australia have improved understanding of lands processes and procedures in Tonga, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) says in a report that concludes its 'Toe Talatalanoa Overseas Program’. The program was initiated by the ministry to address the concerns of Tongan communities overseas regarding land in Tonga.

On a visit to Australia this week, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Lord Tu'i'afitu, visited Geoscience Australia and extended Tonga's gratitude to staff, who responded to the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai volcanic eruption on 15 January. They have a shared interest in improving the monitoring and understanding of geohazards, as the January eruption generated a tsunami that reached Australia.

Pacific Island countries aim to strengthen their regional seismic network and find ways to improve their multi-hazard early warning systems in the South-West Pacific region, where about 30% of global seismicity is observed and 15% of deadly tsunamis are generated. The challenges were addressed at the 7th Annual Meeting of the Oceania Regional Seismic Network was held for the first time in Nuku’alofa, on 17-19 October, followed by the 7th Session of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System Working Committee on 20-21 October.
