Around 31,600 doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived from New Zealand last night, and started to roll out today for inoculations of 12 to 17-year-olds and pregnant women in Tonga. There is huge demand and competition for the Pfizer vaccine globally, and the Prime Minister, the Minister of Health and Tonga's CEO of Health all thanked New Zealand for making this “important gift”, which placed Tonga among the few privileged countries of the world to have it.

Passengers repatriated from Auckland, New Zealand, last week have tested negative in their first of three COVID-19 tests while in quarantine, confirmed Ministry of Health CEO, Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola today. Three COVID-19 tests are now required from passengers during quarantine.

Tonga’s first batch of COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccines is almost finished with 93% used so far, the Ministry of Health confirmed this afternoon, 21 May. Around 25,970 people have been vaccinated so far.

HRH Princess Pilolevu Tuita was the first person vaccinated in the Tonga roll-out of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, receiving her first dose along with frontline workers, at Falemasiva Hall in Havelu, Tongatapu today. Acting CEO for Health Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa said it was “a day of hope.”
