A 21-year-old prisoner detained in a cell on the night Kali Fungavaka was brought into the custody told the court today, he used a piece of mirror and saw police officers in overalls beating Kali Fungavaka in front of the search room at the Nuku'alofa Police station.

A prisoner who was detained in a cell at the Nuku'alofa Police station told the court today he saw through a mirror the accused Police Inspector holding Kali Fungavaka in a chokehold and two other officers punching the victim, while another accused officer later stomped on his head.

Detainees who were in Cell 7 on the night Kali Fungavaka was in custody at the Nuku'alofa Central Police station said the accused civilian Semisi Kalisitane Manu punched the victim, causing him to fall hitting his head on the cement floor. Another witness heard the sound of a beating when Kali was brought into the station by the police officers, the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa heard this morning.

Kali Fungavaka died from blunt force head trauma, after suffering multiple injuries ranging from multiple skull fractures, subdural haemorrhage and bruising to his brain, neck trauma with bruises to other parts of his body, a New Zealand forensic pathologist's report revealed.

The first sitting of Tonga’s Court of Appeal which ended on Wednesday, April 9, in Nuku'alofa delivered judgments, that included reducing a 16-years sentence imposed on a man who sharpened his knife and stabbed his sleeping wife 23 times. The court replaced it with 10-years imprisonment with the final two-years suspended.
