HM King Tupou VI accepted Letters of Credence from Japan’s new Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Munenaga Kensaku and the new resident British High Commissioner, Lucy Joyce at the Royal Palace on 12 May. This is the first Diplomatic Week held since January 2020, when COVID-19 impacted international travel restricting ambassadorial visits to Tonga.

The new British High Commissioner Designate to Tonga, HE Lucy Joyce, congratulated Tonga on its covid-free status this week. The vaccine had arrived before the virus and “not many countries are in such a privileged position,” she said on Tuesday. The High Commission is officially reopening in May after closing for 15 years.
