A USD$80 million grant to finance transformational infrastructure upgrades on Tongatapu including the construction of the Fanga'uta Lagoon Bridge, has been approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through its Tonga SECURE Proiect, which will be the largest development partner-financed project undertaken in Tonga’s history, with the Government of Tonga providing $25 million in counterpart financing.

The contract for the construction of a 720-meter bridge across the Fanga’uta Lagoon and 2.1 kilometers of approach roads was signed today, 10 September by the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Taniela Fusimalohi and Managing Director of McConnell Dowell Construction Ltd., in Nuku'alofa.

The Fanga’uta Lagoon Bridge project, that was expected to be completed in 2024, is ongoing and projected to be completed within the next three years. A procurement deadline is coming up in March this year, but the project co-ordinator said that the geo-survey work had been completed and now the funding was being finalized.
