Public Enterprise Directors

The Ministry of Public Enterprises invites suitably qualified and experienced individuals to apply for a Directorship role at the Public Enterprises (PEs) Board of Directors.

The Ministry is looking for applicants with relevant skills and experiences for the boards of the following PEs:

  1. Tonga Power Ltd (TPL)
  2. Tonga Water Board (TWB)
  3. Waste Authority Ltd (WAL)
  4. Tonga Communication Corporation Ltd (TCC)
  5. Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC)
  6. Tonga Post Ltd (TPost)
  7. Tonga Cable Ltd (TCL)
  8. Tonga Airports Ltd (TAL)
  9. Friendly Islands Shipping Agency Ltd (FISA)
  10. Ports Authority Tonga (PAT)
  11. Tonga Market Corporation Ltd (TMCL)
  12. Tonga Assets & Managers Associates (TAMA).

To create well-represented boards for the PEs, the Government (as Shareholder) seeks a combination of qualities and skills, including key principles:

  • Diversity: A cross-section of individuals with varying backgrounds and experiences.
  • Community Representation: Individuals who represent the communities or sectors where the Public Enterprises operates.
  • Gender representations: Encouraging skillful women applicants.

Key Qualities of Board Members -

Candidates should possess most of the following qualities to be effective board members:

  • Understanding of the board’s role and principles of good corporate governance;
  • Leadership and vision;
  • Honesty and integrity;
  • Accountability and transparency;
  • Passion for the objectives and core functions of the Public Enterprise;
  • Supportive and empowering attitude;
  • Commitment to teamwork and team building;
  • Active participation in directorship roles during meetings;
  • Preparedness for board meetings;
  • Decision-making that prioritizes the best interests of the Public Enterprise and shareholder;
  • Physically and mentally healthy;
  • A focus on actions that benefit the Public Enterprise, shareholder, and community, rather than self-interest;

Key Skills and Experience Required on the Board -

Applicants must demonstrate majority of the following skills and experiences:

  • Familiarity with the core functions of the PEs and sector-specific issues.
  • Business acumen.
  • Effective business communication.
  • Proficiency in adapting strategies to changing business environments.
  • Accounting and financial management skills
  • Administration and corporate management experience.
  • Skills in organizational strategy and planning.
  • Human resources management expertise.
  • Monitoring and evaluating capabilities.
  • Project management experience, particularly in infrastructure development and investment.
  • Acumen in navigating legal and political changes.
  • Knowledge of marketing and public relations.
  • Risk management skills.
  • Sound technical understanding of the Utilities, Transport, Property Management, and/or ICT sectors.
