In a brief address on the closing of Parliament today, King Tupou VI emphasized the values of good character in government and reminded Tongans of the sacrifices made by Tonga, together with its allies – “the countries that valued freedom” in the world wars of the last century.

The King said it is important to learn from history to prevent this generation repeating past mistakes. The monument at Pangai is a reminder of the sacrifices made.

The King did not attend this today’s brief soft closing of the 2024-2025 session of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga and his Royal Address was delivered by Lord Ma‘afu, accompanied by Lord Tu‘ivakano and Lord Nuku, at the Parliament House in Nuku’alofa.

The King stated there is a need for honesty and integrity, not only in the management of public funds, but also in the actions or inactions of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

He said the Legislative Assembly must ensure that the government of the day functions with honesty and accountability. The work and actions of Tonga are being observed by overseas governments and international organizations with whom the nation collaborates for its development.

King Tupou VI reminded the House of three important commandments: keep the Sabbath holy, do not steal, and do not covet.

"Let us return to the God to whom our country was entrusted so that we may be safe, free and prosperous.”

The 2025-2026 session will be opened next week on Friday, 23 May.

Tonga will hold a General Election in November this year.
