Tonga's new Cabinet has revoked two previous government decisions: the privatisation of the Lupepau'u Aiport in Vava'u and a decision that allowed board members of public enterprises to automatically extend their terms this year, even after the end date, 15 March 2025.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr 'Aisake Eke announced the measures today, following a Cabinet meeting, at St. George Government Building, Nuku'alofa.
The former Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Samiu Vaipulu mentioned in a media briefing in December that a New Zealand company was set to privatise the Lupepau'u Airport. However, at a media briefing on Friday, Hon. Dr Eke stated that the Cabinet had decided to revoke that decision to allow for further review and assessment of the proposal.
Regarding the board members of the public enterprises, the Prime Minister stated that the Cabinet had revoked a decision that allowed extension of terms, and that from today, those positions will be open for everyone to apply for, starting after March 15. He emphasized that the purpose is for transparency and to uphold people's right to opportunities. He also mentioned that those currently on the boards may reapply.
The PM also noted that one of the issues they had seen in reports from government ministries regards procurement. He said that they are assessing the law regarding procurement.
Outer islands services
The PM wants to give more attention to the well being of public servants, especially teachers and those in health services, who are transferring to the outer islands. He stated that the Ministries (Health / Education) should take care of necessary expenses before the workers travel. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of providing appropriate accommodation for the postings.
At the briefing the Prime Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Dr Taniela Fusimalohi and Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Dr Siosiua Halavatau.
