Peace Corps/Tonga places American Volunteers in two-year assignments in rural villages and peri-urban locations across the country.
The United States Peace Corps seeks a Programming and Training Specialist for its newly- launched Environment Volunteer program to serve as a full-time, long-term personal services contractor based in Nuku’alofa Office. Selected applicant will help establish the first class of new environment-focused Peace Corps Volunteers in Tonga.
Programming and Training Specialist will:
- Support Volunteers and Volunteer Placement: Review and prioritize requests for Volunteers, arrange and conduct site identification meetings, work closely with local government and environmental sector partners to establish volunteer sites and site programming.
- Lead Program Implementation: Help lead stakeholder meetings with Project Advisory Committee (PAC), disseminate and analyze Volunteer-provided program evaluation data, support and review new project proposals.
- Support technical Training Design and Implementation: In coordination with Training Staff develops, designs, and manages training modules and blended learning modalities for semi-annual and annual Volunteer trainings.
- Manage Small Grants Program: Serve as the primary grant program contact for Volunteers, other post staff, and the DC-based Peace Corps/headquarters’ grant program support staff. Liaise with in-country funding partners and USAID, work closely with Volunteers on individual and community grant proposals and new project development, and manage grant funding sources.
- Other Duties as Assigned: Performs other duties or assignments, when deemed necessary by the Country Director or designee, for the successful implementation of Peace Corps program(s) and/or operations in Tonga.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Has a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts or higher degree in Environmental Sciences or related fields
- Prior Work Experience: Five years’ experience working in environmental programming and/or multi-year experience leading projects related to this position scope
- Language Proficiency: Professional oral and written English and Tongan proficiency
- VISA: Ability to obtain an American visa
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Advanced computer proficiency in MS Office: Windows, Excel, Word.
- Experience working with database management software.
- Demonstrated intercultural competence, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility related skills and experience
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural team
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience developing, leading, and working with either community development projects, community groups, or volunteer groups preferred
- Experience developing or designing training for groups of more than 10 people preferred
Renumeration: Salary offered will be based on salary history with relevant experience. Starting salary range will fall between 30,404 – 44,983 TOP. Position also includes medical benefits, retirement contributions, and additional benefits to be clarified on the final contract.
Supervision: This position works alongside the PTS for Education and reports directly to the Program Manager (PM), who in turn reports to the Director of Programming and Training (DPT)
