Nine new law practitioners were admitted to the Bar this morning, 17 July, during a  brief admission ceremony held at Court 1 of the Supreme Court of Tonga in Nuku’alofa.

The Lord Chief Justice Bishop KC congratulated the new admissions.

“It is a high honour. It is a great privilege. Be worthy of it,” he said.

He reminded the new law practitioners of the ideals of equality, fairness, and justice, set out in Articles 1 and 2  of the Constitution.

“Please remember that you are here to serve and to carry forward the ideals upon which this nation has been built.”

The new law practitioners thanked their families, friends and supporters for supporting them throughout their journeys in heartfelt and moving speeches.

“I wish to serve those who would not access justice.”

Oliver Stephenson said, “It is a privilege to be admitted before this honourable court. I hope throughout my career to justify the confidence placed in me today.”

He spoke about how law has become a family tradition. He is a third-generation lawyer in his family.

Some of the new law practitioners were moved by family members who are senior members of the Tongan Bar, including Lord Tupou KC, Dana Stephenson KC, and Tevita Aho.

The Lord Chief Justice Bishop KC presided over the ceremony, alongside Lord Justices of the Court of Appeal Sir Patrick Elias and Lord Boyd of Duncansby, and Justices of the Supreme Court Justice Tupou KC, Justice Targowski KC, and Acting Justice Langi.
