The British High Commission in Tonga celebrated the official Birthday of HM King Charles III on 11 June with a reception attended by Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala and Crown Princess Sinaitakala, the Prime Minister Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Valu Eke and other guests.

The annual event hosted by the British High Commission in Nuku’alofa is an opportunity to celebrate the bonds of friendship and close ties between both countries; this year was particularly special as the two nations mark 55 Years of Diplomatic Relations.

It was a vibrant event with the traditional Tongan fale decorated with the red, white and blue of the Union Jack flag. Guests were treated to traditional British cuisine and were serenaded by His Majesty’s Armed Forces brass band.

In his address, the British High Commissioner, H.E. Philip Malone LVO, spoke of the close and longstanding links between the two kingdoms, particularly between the respective Royal Families and in the Commonwealth.

He highlighted that many of the institutions of governance in Tonga, the executive, the legislature, the judiciary, the armed forces, the police force and others, were all established by Tonga with UK support over a long period of time.

“In all areas [of development support], we respond directly to Tongan priorities and will continue to do so. We are here for the long-term to support Tonga’s security, economic resilience and its response to the impacts of climate change, coordinating with our regional and global partners,” H.E. Malone said.

He concluded his remarks with a toast to the health and success of HM King Tupou VI.

On behalf of the government and the people of Tonga, the Prime Minister Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Valu Eke emphasised that throughout history, the United Kingdom has played a significant role in shaping Tonga’s journey since 1900.

“The UK has supported Tonga’s efforts to improve healthcare, education, women and youth and infrastructure, these contributions have helped uplift communities and foster sustainable growth across the islands,” the Prime Minister said.

He raised a toast and wished success to HM King Charles III

King Charles III was born on 14 November 1948 and ascended the throne as the Monarch of the United Kingdom and the Realms of the Commonwealth on 6 May 2023.
