Nuku'alofa, Tonga : ‘Okusitino Langi (47) who has an extensive criminal history, was sentenced today to six-years three-months imprisonment for possession of substantial illicit drugs, including 43.85 grams of methamphetamine at Hala’ovave. The prosecution said the amount of methamphetamine seized was substantial, the dealer bags and other drug-related utensils and cash found indicated a commercial enterprise.

Brussels, Belgium : This year’s worldwide mountain of waste electronic and electrical equipment will total an estimated 57.4 million tonnes – greater than the weight of the Great Wall of China, the world’s heaviest artificial object, said the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Forum (WEEE), on International E-Waste Day, yesterday. By weight discarded big appliances such as stoves and refrigerators constitute the largest component or e-waste. These large appliances contain steel, copper and aluminium. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga is returning 10,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines to COVAX today so they can be given to Vietnam before the expiry date. The Ministry of Health is disappointed that unvaccinated people have been slow to take up these doses. So far less than 30% of the total population has been vaccinated. The ministry said it is not easy to get the vaccines and now they are trying to get more. Around 31,600 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive in Tonga next week but these are for 12 to 17-year-olds and pregnant women. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The women’s sevens Vahe Hihifo Warriors team and the Men’s 15-a-side Vahe Kolo Cruise team collected their prize money at the Nuku’alofa Club last night, October 11, after winning their respective competitions in the Centenary Tournament last Saturday. The winning teams collected $10,000 in prize money and there were also prizes for the remaining teams. Tonga Rugby Union CEO Peter Harding said; "We saw very very good rugby.” Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A death penalty was seriously considered by Tonga's Lord Chief Justice, before he gave a life sentence yesterday, to the man who admitted the murder of prominent human rights activist Polikalepo “Poli” Kefu (41) in April this year. Lord Chief Justice Whitten QC, convicted ‘Inoke Silongo F. Tonga (27), a meth addict, of the murder at a beach in Tatakamotonga. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Problematic students in Tonga, including absentees, have increased alarmingly in 2021 compared to 2020, Deputy CEO Ministry of Education, Kalafitoni Latu said during his presentation at the Tonga National Symposium on Illicit Drugs on October 6. “The students that are absent from school are more likely to be vulnerable to the illicit drug problem.” Many come from broken homes and we need to pay attention to these figures, he said. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : HM King Tupou VI today in Tonga's first National Symposium on Illicit Drugs said the problem of illicit drugs is a national issue that requires an urgent integrated national response. Educating everyone on the effects of illicit drugs was a priority. "Our government must allocate and prioritize finances towards this important endeavour as a matter of urgency," the king said.
