A donation of computer equipment including laptops to the Tonga Parliament was announced by the Parliament of the State of Victoria in Australia, today as part of a coordinated effort with the United Nations Development Programme to assist Tonga in the wake of Cyclone Gita.

A Brigadier General with the Nevada National Guard, who was in Tonga when Tropical Cyclone Gita struck on February 12, said they didn't expected Gita to turn towards Tongatapu or expect it to become a serious category of cyclone, but “In terms of sheer destruction, it’s up there with anything I’ve seen.”

Ten power lines workers and two support staff from Australia have joined forces with Tonga Power Ltd staff to quickly restore power to homes and businesses on Tongatapu and ‘Eua. The extra help will ease the workload of Tonga Power staff who have been working tirelessly to get the electricity network up and running since Cyclone Gita struck last week.

Two severely injured cyclone victims remain stable in Vaiola Hospital today. A man, 'Ofila Havea, suffered a severe spinal injury at Popua, and a woman, Ying Wang, sustained severe head injuries at Ma'ufanga, during Tropical Cyclone Gita on the night of February 12.

Ten days after Tropic Cyclone Gita struck Tongatapu and ‘Eua with a Category 4 cyclone on the night of 12 February, life is slowly getting back to normal on the islands. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has given $6 million to Tonga for early recovery activities following the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Gita last week. Rehabilitation costs for electricity, water and sanitation, schools, and other sectors are likely to be very significant, said Hon Poasi Tei, Acting Minister for Finance and National Planning.

A fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) have been transported to Tonga with the support of the Australian government, to provide a comprehensive visual assessment of the damage caused by Cyclone Gita, the World Bank reports today. Tonga has also received a payout of more than US$3.5 million from the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company – the first payout made by the insurance platform established in 2016.
