Outstanding performances by Tonga’s Taekwondo Team have earned the country six medals - 3 Gold and 3 Silver - at the New Zealand Kukkiwon Cup 2023 competition, held from 19-20 August, in New Zealand.

The announcement by the Speaker of the Tongan Parliament, Lord Fakafanua in Parliament on 16 August that the House is no longer funding the daily radio broadcast of the Proceedings of the House, surprised members of Parliament. A 45 year old man who exported methamphetamine from Tonga is the first person to receive a mandatory life sentence under a tough new drugs law. Nomani Kama Manulevu (45) from Nukuhetulu was sentenced to life imprisonment for the unlawful exportation of 29.7 kgs of methamphetamine that was concealed in a refrigerated container to New Zealand in 2021.

Telecommunications specialists from the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces have partnered with His Majesty's Armed Forces, to install new communications systems in Tonga on 12 August.

The new petroleum prices for August - September will significantly increase from tomorrow Friday 18 August. The Ministry of Trade and Economic Development said that the increase in the price of all grades in Tonga this month is due to the annual review price rise combined with higher international product prices.

‘Ikale Tahi center and former All Black, George Moala’s hopes for representing Tonga in the World Cup competition this September, may have been dashed, after he received a five-match suspension from World Rugby in a decision published on 15 August. The matches to which the sanction applies is to be confirmed.
