Invasive species such as rats are the leading driver of biodiversity loss in the Pacific. In Tonga, a proposed rat removal project on Late Island aims to conserve one of the most important sites for biodiversity in the kingdom. Removal of rats from Late will allow the island’s ecosystems to recover, a community consultation was told last week.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme is deeply concerned about the impact of the Hunga Tonga - Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano eruption, and tsunami, on the people of Tonga, Director General, Mr Kosi Latu stated today. The events again highlighted the vulnerability of the Pacific region and its people to natural disasters. SPREP is working on ways to support Tonga during its environmental recovery and rebuilding phases.

Tonga is among Pacific Islands countries that have identified important marine areas that are ecologically or biologically significant, and Vava'u is one area that has sites that need protecting. “There is an urgent need for follow-up activities to manage and mitigate threats on 22 sites identified as priorities. Seven of these sites are awaiting to be gazetted as conservation areas, with different levels of protection,” said Tonga's representative at the global biodiversity conference (CBD COP13) in Cancun, Mexico this week.

SPREP says the ocean needs to be protected from threats such as climate change, ocean acidification, marine pollution and overfishing as it plays a vital role covering 98% of the Pacific region that consists of only 2% of land area.

A project to remove invasive rats from two Tongan islands, Malinoa and Motutapu, is proving to be successful with signs that native plants are recovering along with bird life and marine animals. Other islands of Fangasito and Luahiapo in the Vava'u Island Group are now being included in the programme.
