An important development in Tonga’s criminal justice system, which will allow offenders to carry out Community Service under police supervision, will provide an alternative sentence to a jail term. Community service orders in most cases are imposed on first time offenders and young offenders.

Leuma La’ulu (52) a Samoan national living in Tonga was sentenced to six and a half years at Hu’atolitoli Prison for indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl at ‘Utulau in July earlier this year.
Lord Dalgety QC was discharged from a perjury indictment this morning, after Mr Justice Charles Cato ruled there was insufficient evidence to go forward to trial, at the Nuku’alofa Supreme Court.
Justice Charles Cato, a New Zealander, was sworn in this morning, May 3, as Tonga’s second Supreme Court Judge, replacing Justice Robert Shuster who has been a judge of the Tongan Supreme Court during the past four years.
