Responding to social media commentary, Tonga's Acting Attorney General 'Aminiasi Kefu came out to set the record straight that the King's personal Royal prerogative to dissolve Tonga’s Legislative Assembly "is not limited by law and any legal action taken against this dissolution will be dismissed immediately by the Courts." He was responding to views circulated by Lopeti Senituli, a former Government CEO, who was urging the government to take legal action against the King's decision.

On World Press Freedom Day May 3, Tonga's Attorney General Neil Adsett told journalists in Nuku'alofa that while Tonga's Constitution guarantees Freedom of Speech and Press Freedom, there remains in the Constitution two other conflicting sub-clauses, inserted by an amendment in 2003, which are partly void and should be changed so that it is not misleading.

Six members of a Parliamentary Select Committee have paid costs of $5,500 to the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court for delay in a hearing on an application for a Judicial Review of the Report on how a multi-million pa'anga loan from China was spent on the reconstruction of Nuku'alofa. The Attorney General is considering acting for the parliamentary committee, but not as individual members.

Tonga's Attorney General, Neil Adsett, said that a Parliamentary Select Committee that investigated the use of a multi million loan from China for the restructuring of Nuku'alofa had done a good job, but its report had no real finding of any person taking money they should not have had, or using money for themselves or against the interest of Tonga. But the Attorney General's freely expressed opinion has upset the Select Committee's chairman, 'Akilisi Pohiva.

After Tonga's Attorney General, John Cauchi SC handed over his letter of resignation to the Tongan Government, he today expressed his disappointment that after the government made the initial move to establish an independent Judiciary, it lacked the political will to make it work.
