Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Only 27% of the 1,970 registered Form Five students passed the Tonga School Certificate (TSC) last year, the Ministry of Education and Training announced, releasing the 2019 results to schools on 13 January.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga yesterday paid the United Nations a minimum call of USD$16,444.00 on arrears, after losing its right to vote in the United Nations on 7 January because of accumulated unpaid dues. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A tropical depression, expected to form into a cyclone later this week could threaten Tongatapu by the weekend, Tonga Meteorological Services reported today, 13 January. There is an 85% chance of the cyclone becoming severe, impacting Fiji and then Tonga on 17-18 January. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : While a record number of students sat senior exams in 2019, a majority of Tonga's Form Six students failed to pass their examinations, with the Ministry of Education reporting yesterday that the overall pass rate was only 38% for the Tonga Form Six Certificate, “a remarkable drop from the rate of 48% in 2018.” Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was felt on Tongatapu at 2:05 pm today. Tonga Meteorological Service reported that the earthquake was located 88km Southeast of Nuku'alofa at a depth of 83.9km. There is no tsunami threat to Tonga from this event. -

Canberra, Australia : Owing to the smoke from nearby wildfires, Canberra this month has had the world’s worst air-quality index, with readings 20 times above the official hazardous threshold. The city also recently experienced its hottest day on record (111°F/44°C). Meanwhile, Delhi had its coldest December day on record. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An Otago University study is proposing that malaria in the past may have shaped the genome of Pacific people today, resulting in a genetic predisposition to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and gout. The elevated levels of uric acids, which can strengthen the immune response to the mosquito-borne disease are also what causes the inflammatory reactions in gout. “Pacific people have their own genetic variants,” says Dr Ana Gosling. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Drier than average weather is forecast for Tonga over the next three months (January – March) according to the latest climate update by Tonga Meteorological Services. Tonga's wet season which runs from November until April is also known as the cyclone season. Tonga Met reports the sea surface temperature is expected to be a little above average in February. -

Washington DC, USA : Before US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw his country from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in May 2018, Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister and the nuclear agreement’s chief Iranian architect, was the most popular public figure in his country. A year after the withdrawal, a University of Maryland poll shows, Zarif’s popularity was far surpassed by that of General Qassem Suleimani, the hardline Revolutionary Guard commander who was just assassinated in Baghdad on Trump’s order.
