Nuku‘alofa celebrates Tongan victory over Cook Islands [1]

There were cheerful crowds in Nuku’alofa this morning moments after Tonga grabbed its first victory of the Rugby League World Cup, narrowly defeating the Cook Islands 22 – 16 in Leigh, England.

The Mate Ma’a Tonga avoided suffering another upset as they held out against the relentless Cook Islanders who scored three tries and came close to scoring a fourth in the last quarter of the match.

Tonga scored its four tries in the form of Glen Fisiiahi, Jason Taumalolo, Konrad Hurrell and Jorge Taufua.

The game was broadcasted live in Tonga at 9:00 am. Soon after the match, relieved crowds of fans celebrated in Nuku’alofa’s CBD, with a horn-tooting rally of vehicles along Taufa’ahau Road, including two siren-blasting "off-duty" ambulances.

The win means Tonga still has a chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals. Tonga’s next game is against Italy this November 10 in Halifax, England.
