Best athletes at Inter-Collegiate Sports win multiple gold medals [1]

In last week's Inter-Collegiate Sports Competition, ‘Api Fo‘ou College, Tupou College, Tonga High School were among schools that won the most gold medals. The official results of medal tally have yet to be announced by the organisers.

A spokesperson from the Chair of the Sports Committee told Matangi Tonga this morning the official results would be finalized today after a meeting. They expect to release the results sometime this week.

He said the top secondary schools took away more than 10 gold medals each.

Best athletes

Tupou College athlete, Sione Taufe'ulungaki, won seven gold medals and was named best athlete for the open boys grade.

The best athletes for each grade included:

  • Midget Girls – Tonga Side School, Laisa Takau - 2 gold medals
  • Junior Girls – Takuilau College, Lusia Loni – 5 gold medals
  • Intermediate Girls – Tonga High School, Tupou Hikila – 3 gold medals
  • Open Girls – ‘Api Fo’ou College, ‘Ana Lauteau – 5 gold medals
  • Senior Girls – Queen Salote College, Florence Hakalo – 5 gold medals
  • Midget Boys – Tonga College, Siaosi Mafi, 3 gold medals
  • Junior Boys – Tailulu College, Latu Latavao, 3 gold medals
  • Intermediate Boys – Tupou College, Christian Tupou, 4 gold medals
  • Open Boys – Tupou College, Sione Taufe'ulungaki, 7 gold medals
  • Senior Boys – ‘Api Fo’ou College, Sione Veamatahau, 3 gold and 1 silver medals

Many athletes also broke records in various sports, including high jump, triple jump, discus, and javelin.

They include:

  • Midget girls long jump - Liahona High School, ‘Emeline Toto – 8.83m
  • Junior Girls shot put - Queen Salote College, Kaloni Moala – 11.23m
  • Senior Girls discus – Tonga High School, Natalia Kaitu’u – 36.72m
  • Senior Girls javelin – Liahona High School, Geophaney Fale – 32.78m
  • Open Girls shot put – Tonga High School, Pelenaise Hafoka – 10.52m
  • Open Girls long jump – Tonga High School, Siutiti Ma’ake – 4.64m
  • Open Girls high jump – Liahona High School, Sela Pasikala – 1.45m
  • Midget Boys high jump – Tonga College, ‘Avitovi ‘Aholotu – 1.34m
  • Junior Boys triple jump – Liahona High School, Tevita Kulikefu – 10.99m
  • Junior Boys discus – Tonga High School, Ma’u Vite – 38.73m
  • Intermediate Boys shot put –  Tupou College, Tevita Teisima – 13.42m
  • Intermediate Boys long jump – Tonga College, Penaia Natisolo – 5.81m
  • Intermediate Boys triple jump – Tupou College, Mikaele 'Ilaiu – 12.05m
  • Senior Boys shot put – Tupou College, Sonatane Kaufusi – 14.32m
  • Senior Boys long jump – Tonga College, Siosifa Tu’ipulotu – 6.31m
  • Senior Boys discus – Tupou College, Sonatane Kaufusi – 39m
  • Open Boys javelin – Lavengamalie College, Tau'aho 'Ahokovi – 54.17m

Prizes and medals were presented to athletes on the last day of sports, Friday 23 April. Certificates for the athletes who set new records would be given to them at their schools this week, said the organisers.
