An upgraded water supply system for the people of Nukunuku was handed over on April by Japan's Ambassador Designate, HE Mr Munenaga Kensaku.
A grant of USD90,121 from Japan's Grant Assistance for Human Security Project, installed a new pumping system and a 27,000L water tank and stand for better distribution of water to homes.
HE Mr Munenaga said people in Nukunuku would no longer suffer from water shortages, and could now enjoy a stable supply of water, which is an essential element to sustain and maintain a healthy life.
He said GGP is a small, but significant grant scheme to meet various basic needs at the grassroots level.
“I hope that our GGP will keep playing a great role in constructing stronger and more resilient societies in the Kingdom."
Lord Tu’ivakano in expressing his gratitude to Japan, said this assistance was not only helping the community in Nukunuku but Tonga as well.
The Nukunuku Water Supply Committee sought Japan’s GGP assistance in 2020, prioritizing distribution of stable and clean water to its growing population.
This upgraded water system benefits around 2,150 people living in the village.
