The last time Tony Finau won on the PGA Tour was in 2016 when he defeated 70 professional golfers to win the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. That historic victory made Tony the first Polynesian and Tongan to win on the PGA Tour. Since then, the 30-year-old, is determined to win his second.
“My major goal is to win on the PGA TOUR again,” he said yesterday in La Quinta, California.
“I think that’s something I feel like I’m ready to do. I’m yearning for that feeling again. It’s been a few years.”
Tony is in La Quinta to participate in The American Express – his second PGA Tour event of the year, set to begin tomorrow 16 January. The American Express is also where the young Tony Finau made his PGA debut in 2015, where he ended the competition in 59th place.
He now enters the tournament this time as a veteran and serious contender Last week he finished in fifth place at the Hong Kong Open.
“I was a little rusty early last week but I had a nice weekend…Hopefully I can carry that momentum into this week”, he said.
Last year, Tony was selected to join team USA at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia. Team USA won the 2019 Presidents cup after a dominant performance by all of its golfers, including Tony Finau.
“The Presidents Cup win sure was nice, to get another taste of victory with a team,”
“Those are always special. But as an individual, I think my game has been trending. I’ve had some opportunities, and hopefully I can capitalize on that this year,” he said.
