Flagbearer and shot-putter, ‘Atamaama Tu’utafaiva led Tonga’s athletes in a parade of nations which opened proceedings at the 2019 Pacific Games opening ceremony held at Apia Park Stadium in Samoa, on 7 July.
Athletes from 24 competing countries in the Pacific were excited as they were cheered while parading around the packed stadium. Some were dressed in traditional wear, performing short traditional dances as they made their way through the arena.
Games News Service reports the three-hour event, the first to be held on a Sunday, showcased Samoan culture including dance, legends, and sport.
Around 3,000 student performers from 16 secondary schools put on a dazzling display led by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture (MESC).
The flame cauldron was lit by Samoan weightlifter, Ele Opeloge.
Samoa's head of state, His Highness Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, officially declared the games open, and Samoa’s Prime Minister, Hon Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi thanked those involved who worked hard over the last 14 months to make the event a success.
The development and overall concept of the production revolved around the games slogan, ‘One in Spirit’ in the form of a Samoan legend that was woven throughout the ceremony about Leatiogie and his father Fe’epo and the ancient game of Aigofie.
MESC Assistant CEO, Papali’i Peone Fuimaono Solomona said the story portrays the spirit of blessings.
“The legend tells of how a son sought the blessing of his father before leaving for battle."
"It portrays many parts of our Samoan identity and spirituality…our ancient warrior spirit and the importance of being blessed before we set forth to fight and conquer."
"There are many issues facing our region which require us to be united. The narrative calls for us all to be one in spirit to address these challenges," said Fuimaono.
The event ended with a firework display lasting 20 minutes.
Around 4000 athletes are taking part in 27 sports. The Pacific Games will run until 20 July 2019.
