Tonga Sevens rugby team has enlisted the help of former Wallabies player, Cooper Vuna, to win their matches at this weekend’s Olympic repechage tournament in Monaco - the last chance available to qualify for the Rio Olympics.
Tonga joins 15 national teams in what promises to be a fierce competition that will see them play their hearts out to take out the top spot.
Vuna was named as vice captain for Tonga and is a huge boost for the 28-year-old who revealed his ambition to play for Tonga last season.
“I’m really looking forward to representing Tonga Sevens and we are all focused on doing ourselves proud and progressing as far as we can,” he told Worcester News.
“We’ve prepared really well for the tournament but there is only one place at the Olympics remaining so we know we all have to play at the top of our game over the entire weekend.”
Vuna currently plays as winger for Worcester Warriors and has represented Tonga in Rugby League.
Tonga is part of Pool A, a tough draw competing against Ireland, Zimbabwe and HSBC Paris Sevens winners, Samoa.
The action kicks off tomorrow Saturday 18 June at 11:00am local time (Tonga 10:00pm) at Stade Louis II stadium, Fontvieille, Monaco, with the final taking place on Sunday at 6.30pm local time (Tonga 5:30am Monday) .
Teams that have already qualified for Rio Olympics include Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Great Britain, Argentina, USA, France, Kenya, Japan, Australia and the hosts Brazil.
