Papua New Guinea has offered to help the Tongan government in hosting the 2019 Pacific Games, particularly in the management of the sports.
EMTV News in Port Moresby reported on January 18 that Tonga's Prime Minister, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva met there with Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill to discuss the games.
PM O’Neill, reassured PM Pohiva that PNG would lend its expertise to organise and host the games at Tonga’s request.
PM Pohiva, accompanied by Tonga's CEO for Sports and Minister for Internal Affairs said that he was grateful for the assistance and that Tonga did not have the financial and technical capacity to host the sports.
According to the report, PNG has also offered to rebuild the main track and field stadium and assist in building a High Performance Centre. A PNG assessment team will travel to Tonga to look at costs involved for the project.
