Fiji beat Samoa to confirm RWC placings [1]

Suva, Fiji

Monday, August 1, 2005 - 12:00.  Updated on Monday, May 12, 2014 - 10:27.

Fiji saw off Samoa 21-15 in their final World Cup qualifier in Suva on Saturday in a result that confirms both sides' places in the Rugby World Cup 2007 draw.

Both sides were already assured of direct qualification coming into the clash but the Fijians needed to beat their South Seas neighbours by 36 points to snatch the number one Pacific seeding.

Their failure to do so sees Fiji book a place in the Pool B with Australia and Wales for the sport's showpiece event in a little over two years time.

Samoa's reward for taking the top seed position is a place in a Pool A with England and South Africa with whom they were also grouped in RWC 2003.

The regions last possible qualifier, Tonga, must now enter a repechage in the fourth round of Oceania qualifying.

Fiji bounced back from their defeat at the hands of Samoa in Apia in their last qualifier thanks largely to two tries from inside centre, Maleli Kunavore.

Seremaia Bai added three penalties and a conversion.

All Samoa's points came from the boot of flyhalf Roger Warren
