Tonga celebrates World Red Cross Day [1]

The Tonga Red Cross Society celebrated Red Cross day yesterday Thursday, 8 May at its national headquarters in Nuku’alofa, with a display of information and fundraising activities, selling pre-loved clothing and baking.
The Secretary General of the Tonga Red Cross, Sione Taumoefolau said that the Red Cross is active in Tonga. “Here in Tonga, we reach more than 5,000 people directly and more than 100,000 people indirectly every year, building stronger communities with volunteer run programs such as district emergency response team training, disaster awareness in schools, relief stock prepositioning in the main and outer islands”
Other contributions of the Tonga Red Cross included first aid training, voluntary blood donations, health awareness talks, special education and rehabilitation programs for the people with disabilities, and “disseminating international humanitarian law”.
The Red Cross world wide helps support 180 million people every year.
