Summary:

  • The U.S. Mission in Nuku'alofa, Kingdom of Tonga is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the Public Engagement Assistant in the Public Diplomacy Section.

Duties

The Public Engagement Assistant is the locally employed (LE) staff strategist/advisor responsible for the Mission's Public Diplomacy (PD) engagement with the Press and Media (PM), Established Opinion Leaders (EOL), and Emerging Voices (EV) audience sectors in Tonga. Plans, implements, and evaluates PD strategies, programs, and activities to educate and inform target audiences and increase public support for U.S. policies. In coordination with the PD section and taking direction from the Charge d'Affaires a.i. or Ambassador, at Embassy Nuku'alofa, arranges interviews, press conferences, and media events for Mission officers. Manages the Embassy's education outreach, academic advising, English language, experiential learning, and exchange and alumni programs. Coordinates content and delivery channels (traditional and digital) to engage key audiences; builds and maintains Mission flagship digital properties (social media, website content) in coordinatoin with the PD Section and officers at Embassy Nuku'alofa.

  • Education: University degree in Journalism, Communications, Management, Public Administration, Education, Political Science, or local equivalent.

  • Experience: At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in a multilingual, multicultural, multinational, academic, or governmental work environment is required, with communications, project management, audience/market analysis, and managing social media accounts as significant parts of the job.
  • Education: At least two years of college or university studies.

OPTION 3:

  • Experience: At least eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in a multilingual, multicultural, multinational, academic, or governmental work environment is required, with communications, project management, audience/market analysis, and managing social media accounts as significant parts of the job.

Must have an understanding of communication trends in the region and internationally. Must have knowledge of marketing techniques, market analysis, and audience analytics in Tonga. Detailed knowledge of Tongan higher education, business, and professional exchange programs in required. Detailed knowledge of Tongan secondary education, exchanges, and youth programs is required.

Duties

The position performs a combination of GSO duties for the U.S. Embassy in Tonga involving shipment and customs administration, procurement execution, property management, travel coordinator, leased housing management, and motor pool operation. Coordinates daily and advanced assignments for all drivers to schedule transportation for post personnel and official visitors. May assist other officers as staffing needs required, including but not limited to cnosular duties, facilities management and/or mail room operation.
