The Tonga Australia Support Platform (TASP) is a mechanism which will support the work of the Australian Government in meeting development objectives in Tonga. It is a multi-sector development facility that uses multiple modalities including development program management, technical advisory support, grants management, and subcontracting. TASP supports Australian Government policy development and dialogue to deliver the desired outcomes.

1. Legal Adviser

The Role

The Legal Adviser role will be based in the Prime Minister’s Office. The Adviser, while leading the legal team under the Prime Minister’s direction, is expected to provide day to day legal advice to the Prime Minister and the CSSC. At the same time, the Adviser will work collaboratively and in consultation with the AGO to finalize legal positions of Government. This assignment will strengthen the legal support to the Prime Minister and CSSC and in turn contribute to improving good governance and leadership in Government.

About You

  • Post graduate degree in law with at least 5 years in a senior management position in Government.
  • Eligible to practice as a law practitioner in the Tongan jurisdiction.
  • Specific knowledge of Government of Tonga structure and legal framework including political reforms.
  • Prior national and international experience and knowledge in the field of constitutional reform, political reform, public service reform, public finance reform.
  • Successful operational experience in areas of government administration, government projects and advisory positions to high level leaders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills, the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of government, and function collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent conceptual ability and writing skills.
  • Prior experience working in Tonga, and/or any other Pacific Island country.

Desirable

  • Understanding of Tonga’s constitutional framework, the political reform and public sector framework and history

2. Public Diplomacy Adviser

The Role

The assignment will contribute to the goal of strengthening the core functions of the PMO to the Prime Minister. It will provide primary support in the Office of the PM that is proactive in reviewing and keeping up with issues that are publicly reported concerning Government, domestically and internationally not only by media organisations but also individuals, through social media. The role would assist Government by reviewing and researching misinformation and disinformation and to address this for the common good of the Government and the public.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or public diplomacy with at least 5 years in a public diplomacy or journalist role.
  • Specific knowledge and experience in public diplomacy and designing public awareness plans.
  • Prior national and international experience and knowledge in the field of journalism and media
  • Successful operational experience in areas of public awareness, media operation and media reporting
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills, the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of government, and function collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent conceptual ability and writing skills (in Tongan and English language).
  • Excellent ICT skills in media software programs and equipment.
  • Prior experience working in Tonga, and/or any other Pacific Island country.

Desirable

  • Understanding of Tonga’s media framework, public diplomacy, and Government public engagement function.
  • Understanding of Government of Tonga structures and legislative framework and the Tongan culture
