Peace Corps/Tonga is seeking applications for the position of Backup Medical Provider. The required skill level for the Provider shall be a physician, physician assistant (equivalent of health officer) or nurse practitioner and will provide clinical care for Peace Corps Volunteers and Trainees throughout Tonga in the absence of a Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO) or to assist PCMO as required.

Core responsibilities/tasks: The Provider shall:

  • Provide direct patient care to Peace Corps Volunteers/Trainees (PCV/PCT) and provide referrals to outside medical consultants or facilities, i.e. hospital, clinic, emergency department, or specialist as needed.
  • Be available 24/7 by telephone while being engaged on duty or be present in the Peace Corps Health Unit building.
  • Assist with administrative duties and health education/volunteer counselling when indicated.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information imparted by PCV/PCT on encounters or outside of clinic.
  • Document all consultations with Peace Corps Trainees and Volunteers including description of care, treatment, prescription, and diagnosis for peace Corps records.

Requirement and Credentialing Qualifications

  • Qualified health care personnel either a Medical doctor, Physician Assistant or Health Officer, or Nurse Practitioner, from recognized Institution or University.
  • A minimum of two years of unsupervised clinical experience.
  • Good listening and practical counselling skills.
  • All health care personnel must be credentialed and granted privileges by the Credentialing Committee within the office of Health Services (OHS).
  • In order to satisfy this requirement, all prospective providers must submit:
    • A current license/registration to practice.
    • Curricula Vitae (CV). The CV must specify educational qualification and achievements, relevant trainings, work experience, licenses, and employment, all periods of unemployment greater than three months should be accounted for; and
    • One reference letter from a current clinical colleague or immediate manager (template to be provided by Peace Corps).
