Matangi Tonga Online, Tonga's Leading News Website, plays a vital role in delivering quality independent journalism and information online, and connecting advertisers to our audiences.

We work in Nuku'alofa – and serve a world-wide audience interested in Tongan news, serving 3 million page views to readers annually. Our archives hold over 15,000 articles and over 48,000 images. Our Matangi Tonga masthead was established in 1986, and we have been serving Tonga with quality journalism for 37 years.

1.  NEWS JOURNALIST – Full time staff position in Nuku'alofa, Tonga

An opportunity to join a newsroom in Tonga. We are looking for a journalist with the ability to write clearly, take good photos and have a good knowledge of local media and social media, with a genuine interest in the community.

You will need to have good news sense and general knowledge, to produce content, mostly in English, for Matangi Tonga Online – Tonga's leading news website, www.matangitonga.to.

This position would suit an experienced journalist or someone with relevant tertiary qualifications looking to further a career in the industry, who is prepared to learn new things every day.

A driver's licence is essential.

The successful applicant will:

  • Provide examples of competence in writing balanced, accurate reports
  • Proven skills in writing for online and social media audiences and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Be able to show initiative in generating story ideas, while also working to direction and in collaboration with the editorial team as required, for a diverse Tongan and international English speaking audience
  • Bi-lingual Tongan and English languages, an advantage
  • Current driver's licence.

2. SPORTS REPORTER

Matangi Tonga Online is looking for a competent Sports Reporter to file daily sports reports and updates (on working days), as well as regular interviews with prominent and promising sportspeople who have Tongan connections, and previews of upcoming events.

This role may work remotely, but will involve some Saturday and evening work.

The successful applicant will make a commitment to an ongoing relationship to produce regular articles in collaboration with the editorial team. Reporting is mainly in English. Interviews may be conducted in Tonga,.

The successful applicant will:

  • Show a genuine interest in sports
  • Show a genuine interest in Tonga and the Tongan community in the writer's geographic location
  • Have a connection to or a genuine interest in the Pacific Islands
  • Be able to show examples of published writing in English or Tongan; OR be able to show examples of writing from a journalism programme at a recognised educational institution
  • Be able to show initiative in generating story ideas while also working to direction and in collaboration with the editorial team as required.
