Call for Applications

The Ministry of Education and Training is pleased to call for applications for the 2021 Tonga Government Scholarships (TGS). Under the TGS, scholarships are offered to individuals in Tonga to undertake tertiary studies locally at the University of the South Pacific-Tonga Campus.

Further, the National Scholarship Committee has allocated funds to support privately funded students who are facing financial hardship due to COVID-19. To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must be enrolled full time, have completed at least one semester at an accredited university in the region, including New Zealand and Australia, and working towards the completion of their first bachelor’s degree. The amount allocated for each scholarship will be determined by the Scholarship Committee. Successful applicants will sign an agreement with the Ministry in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Tonga Government Scholarship Programme.

All TGS scholarship holders, upon completion of their study programmes, must return and work in Tonga either at the Ministry, an agency or an institution to which the scholarship is attached for the period specified in the Government of Tonga Scholarship Bond.

Financial Support for Private Students Only due to Covid-19 Hardships (Up to 10 awards) BSc/BCom/BA/BE - open to all academic disciplines.

There is a limited number of scholarships available. Selection will be based on merit in consideration of your academic achievement, relevancy of the study program to the human resource development priorities of the Government of Tonga, financial need and work experiences, in compliance with the set eligibility criteria being established by the National Scholarship Committee. Please ensure that you are eligible to apply before submitting your application.

For In-Country Awards, current Form 7 and recent school leavers with strong leadership abilities are encouraged to apply. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit independent applications directly to the University of the South Pacific-Tonga Campus, for their chosen programme of study, and can at the same time be applying for the Tonga Government’s scholarship. Before accepting the offer of a scholarship, the applicant must provide evidence of acceptance to study in an appropriate course of study.

The application form must be completed in full, copies of all requested documents must be certified. Your application package must be clearly marked “Scholarship Application”, and delivered (in person or by post) by 4.00 PM Monday, 18 January 2021 either to the:

Applications may be deemed ineligible if all relevant forms are not completed (refer to Forms 1-5).
