It is only now that He has gone that I look back and realize how much He has done for Tonga and us his peoples. Like thousands of my contemporaries, we were all brought up in a great schooling system. - Finau Fonua

I was first appalled and outraged by the very insensitive and disrespectful remarks by Mr. Laws concerning our beloved Monarch His Late Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. However, I now find it rather amusing how Mr. Laws has exposed his ignorance and bigotry for all to see.

I wish the people of Wanganui the best of luck for they have elected Michael Laws as their leader, a man who makes great pronouncements out of ignorance. His comparison of our late King to Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe clearly shows that he does not know what he is talking about. - Uili Fukofuka

His Majesty's contributions to our Tonga made Him a beacon of hope and placed him in an inimitable and incomparable position. The significance of His Majesty's contributions in pertain to the introduction and infusion of Tonga into modern 20th Century commerce and economics must we heeded, recognized, praised, remembered and never taken for granted. At a very critical time for Tonga to either emerge or be submerged, His Majesty's vision was the right prescription at the right time for a country still yet merged in feudal and common thinking. - Sione Fonua

Messers Mariner and Tuaileva are forgetting they're living in democratic countries; they don't want the same democratic principles applied in Tonga....Name one democratic government that allows "squatters" to take over public lands?

Mr. Tuaileva's letter comes to no surprise at the situation of Tonga's electricity today. The electricity rates have increased and the Government has got its hands twisted in a very embarrassing conflict of interest case with the Shoreline issue. The Government is apparently what they call a "State within a State", whereby Tonga'’s national assets are run and owned by the King'’s siblings. If this were a private company owned by a commoner as we have seen with the Domestic Airline license battle then it would have been a totally different story. -William Mariner

The allegation that China forces abortion on families so they will have one child only exposes the author's ignorance of real conditions in China. China has a population of 1.3 billion, over 1/5 of the world's population, which constitutes serious challenges to the well-being of Chinese people and sustained development between population on one hand, and the economy, society, resources and environment on the other. It is a natural choice for Chinese people to adopt the family planning policy. The combination of state guidance with voluntary participation together with both incentive and restrictive measures is an important principle China has always followed since the implementation of the family planning policy. - Zhang Edward

Labor Day in America is a very special day for me personally, I have been involved with the Labor movement here in America and Internationally for the past thirty years, and have seen first hand of how the most powerful take advantage of the weak and under privileges of the world. - M. T. Tuaileva

The argument in Parliament at present centres around the size of the electricity price hike - which is the short-term issue. But alongside should be a more sustained discussion on the long-term solution to power supply. Tonga is not on its own on this issue as many countries are just as vulnerable as we are. But it's time like this that size does matter and for once - small is beautiful. Oil is a non-renewable source and as it dwindles at source, the price will continue to climb. There are alternatives abound which we should now consider seriously.

At this time I would like to share my view and humble opinion on the situation and the impression of where we are with the discussion of changes for a free and independent elected form of Govt., that has been suggested and proposed in the past year, with all due respect to the status quo Govt. there seems to be a feeling of resistance to the majority of voices and opinion from the Majority of all Tongan Globally, a voice for a Democratic free and independent election form of Government for the next generations in Tonga. - M. The Ha‘afeva Health Clinic is currently facing a real problem with transportation of its emergency case patients to the Niu‘ui Hospital in Pangai. The problem is inappropriate, unreliable, and unsafe mode of transportation for the patients. I have observed and experienced this problem for many years now. I have been hoping that the Government of Tonga would do something about it, but what's the big deal, we are just little island people. - Siosaia Fatani

When was the last time you were in Tonga to witness the state of our country in terms of development? It appears that our neigbours are moving onto fourth gear whilst we are still on first gear for obvious reasons.

I have been observing the services provided by the Tonga Consul in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I have to admit that it is a great waste of time. I truly feel, and I am certain that I'm not the only one feeling this way, that the government of Tonga could find ways to spend their money, that maybe beneficial to the government and for the people of Tonga. - Concerned Citizen of Tonga

Nuku'alofa, Tonga
I have no intention of engaging the doyen of Tongan journalists in arguing over how long is a short work week, suffice to say that my original public statement of defence has successfully quelled the swelling wave of angry letters from irate taxpayers who were misled by your original article alleging, amongst other things, that, "Tonga's parliament has decided to work less for more pay...." - Lopeti Senituli

I find it absolutely shocking and disappointing that Lopeti Senituli, the so-called Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Feleti Sevele, was accusing you of misinforming and misleading the public in connection with your comment on the working hours or days of Parliament. It is a simple calculation I am sure Lopeti is quite capable of doing, if he did his homework. - Tavake Fusimalohi
