A shallow M5.3 earthquake with an epicenter located 72km east of 'Ohonua, 'Eua was recorded at 4:04am this morning, February 6, according to the USGS.

The 1.7km deep epicenter, 98km east of the capital Nuku'alofa, was located close to the Tonga Trench.

The Fua'amotu local earthquake bulletin issued at 4:38am gave the location at 21.259S 174.260W, origin 4:35am. The bulletin was sent by text messaging from the Fua'amotu Meteorological Office. 

We did not feel the earthquake at the Matangi Tonga office in Pahu, Nuku‘alofa.
