Tonga’s Sevens team has come out empty handed in the Gold Coast Sevens tournament, failing to secure a win in the two-day event October 12-13. New Zealand won the tournament, defeating Tasman rivals Australia 40 -19 in the finals.

Team Tonga lost all of its five fixtures against New Zealand, Kenya, United States, Argentina and Portugal. The team was also scoreless in its pool matches against New Zealand and Kenya. They were outclassed by Kenya 38 – 0 and New Zealand 26 – 0.

It was not all bad news, however. Tonga displayed its potential with two nail-biting games against the United States and Argentina. Tonga lost to USA 14 – 7 and Argentina 17 – 12.

Despite the exciting displays, Tonga ended the tournament on a poor note, suffering its worst defeat against a low-ranked Portugal 40 – 7.

The Gold Coast Sevens tournament is the first event of the 2013-14 World Sevens Series.
