Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, May 2, 2013 - 13:12.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

The British and Irish Lions have enlisted two Tongans, Mako Vunipola and Toby Faletau, for their Australian tour this year.

Along with Samoan centre Manu Tuilagi (England), Prop forward Mako Vunipola (England) and Number-Eight Toby Faletau (Wales) will make rugby union history in being the first Polynesians to wear the British & Irish Lions jersey.

Mako Vunipola (22) who was born in New Zealand, and plays for the St Alban’s Saracens, made his debut for England last year. He is the son of former 'Ikale Tahi captain Fe’ao Vunipola, who led Tonga in the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

Tongan-born Toby Faletau (22) made his debut for Wales in 2011 and contributed to the team’s success in the World Cup that year. He is also the son of a former 'Ikale Tahi player Kuli Faletau, who fought alongside Mako’s father in the 1999 World Cup.

The British & Irish Lions will tour Australia in June, where they will take on all the Australian Super 15 Teams and the Wallabies.

The official Wallabies squad has not been announced, but Tongan-Australians Israel Folau, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Sitaleki Timani and Wycliff Palu have been announced for the preliminary squad.
