It is with great shock and sadness that I learned of the death of His Majesty King George Tupou V of Tonga, who passed away yesterday afternoon in Hong Kong.
On behalf of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, I send my heartfelt condolences and earnest prayers to the Kingdom of Tonga - a member of our ACP family of nations.
We remember His Late Majesty as a genuine advocate of progress, a distinguished statesman, and a true gentleman. Despite many challenges faced during the course of his reign, he successfully and peacefully ushered in Tonga's first democratically elected government in 2010, after relinquishing much of his executive powers for the sake of a more democratic political system. The significance of such a bold and historic move will remain for generations to come.
I wish to convey this message of sincere condolences from the ACP Group of States to Your Lordship, and through you to Her Majesty Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho, the Members of the Royal Family and the People of Tonga.
Standing united with your Government on this mournful occasion, please accept, Honourable Prime Minister the assurances of my highest consideration.
Mohamed Ibn Chambas. ACP Secretary-General, Brussels, Belgium.
