Laulea Beach in Fatumu, an area known for its strong currents, has been “strictly closed” to the public by the Tonga Police, effective today, 17 December 2025, until after the New Year's holiday. Police Deputy Commissioner, Halatoa Taufa, told Matangi Tonga today, this measure aims to prevent drownings during the holiday season, following the death of a 40-year-old male last month.
He said the man, a father from Ha'ateiho, residing in New Zealand, drowned while attempting to rescue his two sons, aged 13 and 14 years, who were swept away by strong currents while swimming at Laulea. Despite the attempts of others, including Police officers, to assist, the man could not be saved.
Deputy Commissioner Taufa stressed that Laulea is a popular spot for families, especially during the holidays, but noted the high risk of fatalities at this time.
"There is a high possibility for one or two deaths if people were allowed to use the beach at this time around," he said.
"The popular holiday beach is strictly off-limits to the public, regardless of whether they intend to swim or not."
He said that the ban also prevents people from entering the beach for recreational drinking, which has previously led to drownings.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Police and the Ministry of Lands, Survey, Planning & Natural Resources are working jointly to install safety signage and clear directional markers at Laulea Beach.
Tonga Police stated, "Any person who fails to comply with this directive commits an offence and may be liable to a fine of up to $500, imprisonment for a term not exceeding six (6) months, or both."
