Tongan archer qualifies for Olympic [1]

Nuku'‘alofa, Tonga

Archer, Siosifa Moala Taumoepeau is the first Tongan athlete to qualify to participate in the Athens Olympic in August.

The Tonga Amateur Sport Association on March 22 announced Sifa's qualification to represent Tonga in the sport of Archery. Meanwhile Sifa is in Australia on Olympic scholarship to participate in archery elite competitions as part of his building up to the Olympic.

Siaosi 'Enosi from TASA said that they were hopeful for more athletes to qualify for the Olympic, particularly from Judo, Tae Kwando, Boxing and Heavy-weightlifting which were going through their qualifying matches. Siaosi said that by May TASA should know definitely the number of athletes who will represent Tonga in the Olympic.

Archery is a relatively new sport for Tonga with no more than four people who are seriously involved in it, and for Sifa to qualify has meant determination and hard work.

The last time a Tongan athlete qualified to participate in the Olympic, was Paea Wolfgramm in 1996, who represented Tonga in boxing at the Atlanta Olympic Games and returned home with a Silver Medal.
