Tonga is far from ready to host the Pacific Games set for 2031 but efforts are being put into the speedy development of new sports facilities, the President of the Pacific Games Council (PGC), Mr. Vidhya Lakhan said in Nuku'alofa, today.
Mr. Lakhan and his CEO, Mr. Andrew Minogue arrived in Tongatapu on 5 April, on an official visit to look at Tonga’s efforts towards the preparation for the Pacific Games.
Because of recent changes in the political scene in the Kingdom, progress has been slow since the bid was won by Tonga in October, last year.
“As of today, nothing has happened and I think the change in leadership has delayed a few things which we’ve extended the time frame for,” Mr. Lakhan said.
Under the post-agreement that was signed by the Minister for Sports at the time, Hon. Lord Vaea, the host country was given a six months period to pass certain legislation that will establish the audit and governance authority and the games organizing committee.
CEO Mr. Minogue said that because of the change of leadership in the government, they’ve extended the time-frame for the host country to pass this legislation.
Although Tonga is nowhere near ready now, both the President and CEO of the PGC are confident that Tonga will be ready by2031.
The CEO of TASANOC, Mrs. Netina Latu Vea, said that efforts are being made to scout young talent for Team Tonga in all 24 sports, as this will be the first time for Tonga to host the regional event.
