Tongan heavyweight boxer disqualified from Oceania contest [1]

Nuku'‘alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, April 28, 2004 - 09:26.  Updated on Monday, May 5, 2014 - 12:26.

A Tongan heavy weight boxer, John Argall, was disqualified this morning, from the Olympic Qualifying Oceania Championships currently being held in Tonga at the 'Atele Indoor Stadium, Ha'ateiho.

Jim Little, the Secretary General of Oceania Boxing, said that a complaint was made before the tournament started on Monday, April 26 when Argall fought Nena Marco of Tahiti, in the 91kg division. But because there was not enough evidence to support the complaint they allowed Argall to fight and he won.

Jim said that last night they received evidence that Argall had fought twice as a professional fighter in New Zealand, and therefore in a committee meeting this morning with three other members, Joseph Lowe, Fiji; Hiper Fatupaitu, Samoa, and Grand Peters, Australia, they passed a decision to disqualify John Argall from the Championship.

The Oceania Championship started on April 28 and will end on Saturday, May 1.

A total of 123 boxers are competing, including 20 female boxers from American Samoa, Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti.

The ten countries which are represented in this Olympic Qualifying Ocreania boxing Championship are, Australia, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga and Vanuatu.

All the male gold medallists in the Tonga championship will qualify to participate in the Athens Olympic in August.
